Right now I am trying hard to record my first full length CD of original music. Any luck it will be out soon. My influences for this project comes from everything that I have experienced musically and personally. Definitely influenced by many great jazz singers but some of my favorites are Carmen McCrae, Betty Carter, Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, Johnny Hartman, Bobby McFerrin and Cassandra Wilson.
As for the saxophone, it is harder to really know what influenced me....so many saxophone players and often too many notes. But people like Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon and of course Coltrane would top the list.
Along with my original songy song project, I have started to collaborate with others in a more improvisational way.
The last couple of years I've had great fun working with the Mile Zero Dance Company. I have played as they danced, I have danced with them while I've played, I have danced with rocks and sang an aria whilst riding a stationary bicycle that lit me up as I pedalled. All quite boring and ordinary really. They are always up to something. check out their website for information on their shows www.milezerodance.com I hope to do more with them in the future.
A Duo with Mark Klemm that was inspired by an album by Kenny Werner and Claudia Villela who just got together and improvised most of an album. We have set forth to create music together in the same vane starting with compositional nuggets that will lead us to whereever they lead us.
Finally, The Parkers. A new and exciting collective that features the talents of Thom Golub on bass, Kevin Parkinson on drums, Bob Tildesley on trumpet and myself on sax and vocals. We play original music plus music by William Parker and select cool composers. It is a friendly avant garde group that crosses the borders of sweet and melodious to wild and dissonant with light heartedness and groovy bass lines. We are looking at recording this year...so I will keep you posted for release dates and gigs.
